Second spot in the Irwell Riverside By election

Steveblog  I would like to say what a great campaign Steve Middleton as put together in such a short space of time. It as been a pleasure to work with him and his wife. I feel he would have made an excellent candidate for the people of Irwell riverside, sadly that was not to be. I stated a few weeks ago that if Steve missed out this time round he would be more prepared to mount a full on campaign in langworthy where we all ready have a sitting candidate. He lives in the ward and would be fully updated with the issues. Losing is not a great feeling after the intense amount of effort you put in, but it gives you the will to come out fighting next time round.Plus you have the experience. After the disaster we had in Pendlebury i was pleased we held second place. but the turnout was a poor i estimate around 17%. The Sad part of the night was the Return of Hazel lapping up the cameras, shame she forgot about the young Labour Candidate who had just won. I offer my congratulations to him,and hope he will enjoy the position as much as i have done during the past three years. Tomorow i hope to speak with our leader to discuss the coming campaigns that will be on us sooner than later,so again well done to Steve and the Liberal Dem team.

What price can you put on human life?

Cancer drug gran dies

A GRANDMOTHER who won a landmark battle forcing health chiefs to pay for a life extending cancer drug has died.

Jean Murphy, 62, took her fight to get a pioneering kidney cancer drug called Sutent on the NHS to the High Court, and her case helped force a change in the rules, which made the treatment widely available in England earlier this year.

An anonymous donor who read about the legal battle gave her the money to start treatment and she responded so well that Salford health bosses agreed to start paying for it last August – her health improved dramatically on the drug and it extended her life by almost a year.

But Mrs Murphy died of heart failure surrounded by her family last night after a short illness.

Her daughter Cathy, 37, said: “My mum was a fighter all her life. She hated injustice and she was never afraid to speak out against it.

“She was outraged when she was told she could not have the treatment she needed and every time she was told ‘no’ it made her more determined to fight.

“We are so glad she fought and won Sutent because it encouraged other people to fight too – and it dramatically improved her health, we believe we would have lost her months ago if she had not had it.”

Comment how have we got into a situation where the ability to get drugs depends on where you live, or if your wallet is deep enough. I met Jean and her family typical Safordians probably worked all their lives and when they needed the system it failed. If we can prolong life cost should not be an issue
