Baby P’s abusive ‘stepfather’ jailed for life Baby P’s sadistic “stepfather” was jailed for life today after a campaign of abuse against the little boy and the rape of a two-year-old girl.
Little Peter’s mother was jailed indefinitely and told she would serve at least five years for causing or allowing her son’s death.
Peter was 17 months old when he was found dead in a blood-spattered cot in August 2007 having suffered a broken back and fractured ribs.
He had more than 50 injuries despite being on the at-risk register and receiving 60 visits from social workers, doctors and police over eight months.
The 32-year-old stepfather, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was told by Judge Stephen Kramer he would serve a minimum of 10 years.
This will run concurrently with a sentence of 12 years for his part in Baby P’s death.
The mother, who is 27 and also cannot be named, begged the judge for mercy yesterday as she apologised for “letting down” her “darling” son.
The mother, her boyfriend, and lodger Jason Owen, 37, of Bromley, Kent, were being sentenced for causing or allowing Peter’s death.
Owen was also given an indeterminate sentence and told he would serve at least three years.
Peter’s natural father told the Old Bailey yesterday of his horror at the knowledge that the little boy suffered months of pain, fear and loneliness before his death.
He said his life had become a “living nightmare” since losing his son.
In a victim impact statement the father, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told of the moment he was confronted with his son’s lifeless body in a north London hospital.
He said: “I could not believe what was happening. I could not believe it was my son.”
Peter’s death sparked an outpouring of public anger and led to strong criticism of the social workers, police officers and health professionals responsible for protecting him.
Five employees of Haringey Council in north London, including children’s services director Sharon Shoesmith, were sacked and the General Medical Council has suspended two doctors involved in the case.
The judge said: “Any decent person who heard the catalogue of medical conditions and non-accidental injuries suffered by Peter cannot fail to have been appalled.
“It was clear that significant force had been used on Peter on a number of occasions.
“Whatever the truth of what took place and the role and motivation of each individual, the result was that a child died in horrific circumstances with injuries that can only have caused great pain and distress prior to his death.”
He told Peter’s mother: “You are a manipulative and self-centred person, with a calculating side as well as a temper.
“I reject the suggestion that you were blind to what was happening in that house or that you were naive.
“Your conduct over the months prevented Peter from being seen by social services. You actively deceived the authorities.
“Health professionals who saw Peter shortly before he died seem at the least to have missed the import of the injuries to him.
“However, that does not, in my judgment, absolve you from your culpability.
“You acted selfishly because your priority was your relationship with (the stepfather).”
Cam praise for house rant Tory
David Cameron was left red faced after praising a Tory MP at the centre of the expenses scandal.
Tory leader Cameron called Anthony Steen a champion of the “underdog”. But hours later Steen launched an expenses rant.
Steen claimed he was only forced to stand down as MP for Totnes because voters were jealous of his “very, very large house”.
Steen lavished more than £87,000 of taxpayers’ cash on his second home over four years. Cameron branded the rant “totally unacceptable” but days earlier paid him a glowing tribute in a letter.
Is this not real conservatives creeping out the back door?
neighbourhood management what is it?
Definition
Neighbourhood management is a process of improving and joining up local services in disadvantaged neighbourhoods and making them more responsive to local needs. It involves neighbourhood management partnerships of local residents, together with key agencies and service providers, using community information to improve services and reduce gaps in outcomes.
The partnerships work with a neighbourhood manager, or a small neighbourhood management team, responsible on the ground to help improve services, address service gaps and focus action on local priority areas. There is no one model of neighbourhood management.
USING COMMUNITY INFORMATION TO IMPROVE SERVICES AND REDUCE GAPS IN OUTCOMES
Comment i felt this was the best way i could find to discribe it. Does it work?over the past year i have had my concerns. Yesterday i held a meeting with key stakeholders and for the first time i felt it was productive. Lets hopei am right because if it fails i for one would feel let down as i expect the people i represent.
