Just reading Cllr Lindleys site, and it seems his key focus is on the General election. What chances do the Tory party have?

Big majority to turn over, and the Labour candidate what’s her name i always forget seems to have come out of the expenses fiasco OK, unlike Hazel. And if a well known Lib Dem stood it could act as a spoiler. So i am not a betting man but it’s a close call.

Well the arguments go on and on about the Advertisers closure in Eccles but wo do you blame

I shamelessly Blame Labour, as Tom said but who do you the readers blame. Ok it’s not all down to Labour but i have to say that anyway. What concerns me is when we deprive advertising Revenue from a product that lives on it, surely we will kill it, maybe slowly but in the end it will disappear. Then my worry is democracy starts to feel the after effects.

BRITAIN faces a public spending squeeze lasting a decade,The Business Secretary admitted there WILL be cuts in some areas.

without comments

His confession blew apart Gordon Brown’s repeated claims that only the Tories will have to slash spending.

Lord Mandelson said it will take the UK economy ten years for public spending to return to pre-slump levels. He said in the Commons: “I think the fall in the economy is coming to an end, but the severity is not yet behind us.

“There will be spending choices and a growing need for greater efficiency across the board, and less spending in some programmes.

“Of course we will be operating under greater public spending constraints in the coming decade than we have in the past ten years. Mandy had rehearsed what he would say with the Premier, Chancellor Alistair Darling and Schools Secretary Ed Balls.

TORY veteran Ken Clarke last night admitted that hard-working families could pay MORE tax under a Conservative Government

without comments

The Shadow Business Secretary revealed the party is looking at ways of raising taxes to pay for coping with the slump.

And he insisted British companies should not be hit first, saying: “If you’re looking for tax increases in a recession, it’s obvious that you don’t look in the first place to business.”

Dead bloody right mate….

Charles Clarke: Gordon Brown and expenses to blame for Norwich North crisis

Gordon Brown’s mishandling of the expense scandal is to blame for Labour’s problems ahead of the Norwich North by-election, Charles Clarke, the former home secretary, has said.

Charles Clarke has blamed Gordon Brown’s mishandling of the expenses scandal for the Norwich North Crisis

The latest poll by ICM shows that Labour is on course to lose the once-safe seat, with the party on 30 per cent compared to 34 per cent for the Conservatives, 15 per cent for the Liberal Democrats, and the Greens on 14 per cent.

Ian Gibson, the former MP, stepped down after The Daily Telegraph’s disclosure that he sold his taxpayer-funded second home to his daughter at below market rates led the party to ban him from standing for Labour at the general election.

Mr Clarke, who represents the neighbouring seat of Norwich South, suggested that local voters were unhappy that Dr Gibson had been made a scapegoat over the expenses scandal, and claimed that he had been sacked by a “kangaroo court”.

He said: “It is an uphill fight. I think there is an expenses element. People do feel that Ian was unfairly treated. It was a badly taken decision.”

Mr Clarke, a prominent critic of the Prime Minister, added that Labour’s continuing poor opinion poll performance meant that Mr Brown remained at risk of a leadership challenge.

A separate poll by YouGov showed that the Conservatives’ lead over Labour nationally had stretched to 17 points, at 42 per cent to 25 per cent, with the Liberal Democrats on 18 per cent.

Mr Clarke said: “People will make up their minds over the next few months what they need to do and what’s the best thing for Labour to do to win the election. As the polls currently show there are challenges that still arise.

“If the electorate feel uncertain with where we are and what’s going on then I think that in those circumstances anything can happen.

“I don’t think it’s a finished and closed question but it will depend on the electorate, principally.”

But Alan Johnson, the Home Secretary and front-runner to replace Mr Brown, insisted that Labour could still win the election – and appeared to suggest that voting day would sooner than the deadline for the poll, 11 months away in June.

He told the BBC’s Andrew Marr show: “Look, where the Tories are, whether it’s the late 30s, one of the polls said 37, early 40s, eight months before a General Election everything’s to play for. It is game on.”
