Problems with alcohol within our cities.

with 2 comments

Six months ago i drank and today i am tea total. Hard to give up yes but for health reason i called it a day. I call in most nights and pick up four bottles of non alcoholic beer taste the same only difference i can drive and i have lost 2 stone in weight. What does concern me though is how cheap beer seems to be in our Local super markets. No wonder we see so much trouble on the street with blind drunk kids. Am i against drink not at all but why do we not drink to enjoy it instead of going out to get steamed and cause a bloody nuisance? the police spend more time with drunks, our emergency units get hammered most nights. So try to reduce it have a good time but think what it’sShameless460 like to get up in the morning without running to the toilet to puke..

Education budget cut by £100m

Figures published by the Treasury have revealed cuts in education spending by more than £100m in the next year.

The Daily Telegraph reports today that 14 of 23 departments will see budgets fall next year, including the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills which will be subject to spending cuts of 24.6 per cent.

Shadow chancellor George Osborne said the figures had demonstrated the “Labour lie on spending once and for all”.

“Gordon Brown should now abandon his dishonest claim that he can go on increasing spending and accept that we Conservatives have been right to say that spending has to be cut to deal with this government’s debt crisis,” he said.

But the Treasury denied that “cuts” would be introduced, insisting that £3bn in spending this year had been brought forward from next year’s budget.

“The reductions are not cuts, as spending has been brought forward from subsequent years’ budgets,” a spokesman said.

“It is not correct to say the government is cutting overall spending.”

The figures also reveal that key departments such as transport and defence are to see cuts of almost eight per cent.

Meanwhile, some of the country’s highest profile cultural projects could be halted after a £100m shortfall was discovered in the Department for Culture Media and Sport.

An inquiry has been launched by ministers into the development of the vast overspend, with officials admitting that “difficult decisions” will need to be taken on cutbacks.

Give us a clue IAN what lies?

Chloe has fought a model, positive campaign and deserves such a positive result. It’s gratifying that the smears of the Labour campaign and the outright lies of the Liberal Democrats have been punished by the electorate.

A swing of 16.5%, of course, if replicated at the next General Election would see a Conservative victory in Worsley & Eccles South. Dont count your chickens just yet.Untitled

Captain Pugwash cartoonist John Ryan dies

Celebrated cartoonist John Ryan, whose most famous creation was Captain Pugwash, has died aged 88.

Edinburgh-born Mr Ryan drew Pugwash as a comic strip for The Eagle in 1950 while an art teacher at Harrow. The BBC commissioned a series of animated shorts featuring the bumbling pirate using cut-out characters moved by hidden levers.

Mr Ryan, who died at the Rye Memorial Hospital, East Sussex, also created Mary, Mungo & Midge and was the Catholic Herald’s cartoonist for 40 years. Son Christopher said: “He bought a lot of fun to a lot of people.”

‘Gordon Brown needs more sleep to be better Prime Minister’ – plus average kip of leaders including Obama, Blair and Thatcher

without comments

  • Yes i agree about Five years worth after the next election!!
Gordon Brown (Pic:PA)

Gordon Brown is making mistakes because he doesn’t get enough sleep, a former No 10 aide has claimed.

Cabinet colleagues have long complained that the gruelling hours Mr Brown works affect his judgement.

They say the PM is worn out and makes things worse, not better, by working too hard.

Now Jonathan Powell, who was Tony Blair’s chief of staff, also claims Mr Brown would be better off getting a good night’s kip.

Tony Blair always boasted he slept well, despite the pressure of the job.

Mr Powell said: “I would always rather work and vote for a leader who sleeps well than one who wants to be woken all the time. Having been there, I think politicians get too little sleep. They need more time to rest and think.”

Ministers and aides who receive emails at all hours from the PM agree he would perform better if he took it easier.

Downing Street said Mr Brown would be taking a month’s break over the summer.

But the PM later insisted he would be taking just “a few days” off. He is also rumoured to have once set off a burglar alarm in Downing Street by trying to get into his office to work before it was unlocked.

One Cabinet minister said: “The problem is he thinks the answer to everything is to work harder. It would be much better if he got some sleep and had a clearer head.”

Cabinet ministers Peter Mandelson and Tessa Jowell have both been named as “nannies” responsible for trying to get the Mr Brown to go to bed at a reasonable time. Downing Street denied the claims.

Mr Brown has admitted getting little sleep but blamed his sons John and James Fraser.

He said one is an early riser while the other likes to stay up late.

PARTY IN THE PARK

without comments

The 4th Party In The Park sees a huge top draw line up on Salford’s biggest stage, as the city’s king of hiphop, The Unexpectable, heads a bill which also includes street dancing sensation, Elliott Campion and his New Era crew, indie-rock resounders, Sugarwood, Salford’s top singer/songwriter, John Herring and riproaring rapper, Briggzy

Party In The Park is presented by The Amber Project, set up in memory of local teenager, Amber Lok, and always draws the whole community of Charlestown and Whit Lane together for one giant free celebration.

As well as the bands and singers, this year’s Party In The Park also stars well known poet, Jackie Hagan, the Silky DJs and some very special guests.  There’s a full fairground, stalls, magicians, clowns and a puppet show.

Says The Amber Project’s Sarah McCulloch:

“This year we hope to top the other three we’ve had, and have loads of bands, rappers, dancers, rides and stalls to keep you totally entertained. The Day is for our community and families to come together and have a great party.”

CHILD POVERTY IN SALFORD

A NOD AND A WINK TO CHILD POVERTY IN SALFORD

Star date 22July 2009

The Child Poverty Bill, which enshrines in law the commitment to eradicate child poverty by 2020, has just been formally approved by the House of Commons. In Salford, over a third of our kids live in poverty and the Council has a shocking record on looking after vulnerable kids. So you’d think that the authorities would be pushing for the sharpest possible options to sort this out. No chance…

Make no mistake about it, Salford City Council’s record when it comes to vulnerable children is a national disgrace. In spring last year, Salford Star called for Jill Baker, Head of Children’s Services, to resign after OFSTED absolutely slated the Council on its record of looking after children on the `at risk’ register, while Council Leader John Merry admitted in issue 7 of the magazine that “We  didn’t safeguard children in the way that we should have done”.

More recently, three children’s homes in Salford were judged `inadequate’, again by OFSTED, while the official report into the tragic death of toddler Demi Mahon showed so many failings in the city’s Children’s Department it almost ran out of paper.

Way back in March, the horribly named Salford Strategic Partnership Executive (a mix of top people from the Council, the URC, the Primary Care Trust, Partners IN Salford, Community Committee, Chamber of Commerce etc) was consulted by the Government on the Child Poverty Bill

Introduced by the Council’s Chris Marsh, the item was bottom of the agenda, and the Executive was asked for its views on three options `with regard to child poverty’.

Option 1 was for the introduction of a duty on Local Authorities to tackle child poverty.

Option 2 was that all partners would be required to have regard to child poverty.

Option 3 was for the setting of a specific child poverty indicator by Local Authorities in their LAA targets.

Surely after everything that Salford’s most vulnerable kids have been through the Executive would vote for the imposition of a duty to tackle child poverty? Nope. They voted for the softest possible Option 2, to `have regard to child poverty’. And this view – from our so-called representatives – was duly sent back to the Government.

Fortunately, when the Child Poverty Bill was passed, the Government ignored these minority nods and winks to poverty and it’s now enshrined in law that local authorities have a duty to tackle child poverty.

In a paper produced by the Government on the consultation the reason given for councils, like Salford, not wanting a duty to be imposed on them was that “They believed the human and financial resources required would put a significant strain on local budgets”.

Isn’t this `strain on local budgets’ what caused Salford’s child protection problems in the first place, when the city wouldn’t spend money on social workers? It’s really strange that no-one in the Council thought £20million spent on the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra might put more of a `strain on local budgets’ than a duty to end child poverty…

“Central government is giving itself a duty to end child poverty and the Child Poverty Action Group strongly believes it is right for the bill to give local authorities a clear duty too” says Child Poverty Action Group’s Tim Nichols “Ministers must consider the extra resources that might be required for the new demands put on councils. But with four million British children living below the poverty line, it is essential that action to end this moral outrage is a priority of government at all levels when deciding how to allocate resources.”
