David Cameron blasted by Tory peer as ‘Notting Hillbilly toff’

Voters think David Cameron is a Notting Hillybilly toff, one of the Tories’ poshest peers said yesterday.

And Lord Salisbury added that the Conservative leader was perceived as lacking the bottle to make big political decisions.

He rounded on Mr Cameron for being out of touch with the electorate, saying: “I haven’t heard yet a lot of clarity from him. He is nudging towards it a bit but it is a bit like pulling teeth.”

The peer, an ex-defence minister and Tory leader of the Lords, insisted the general election was not in the bag despite the Norwich North by-election result. He said: “It’s not won at all, it’s not a done deal.”

Lord Salisbury said voters still had doubts about the Tory leader, who lives in the trendy Notting Hill area of west London. He added: “Does he believe in anything? Does he have what it takes? I believe he does but there is a lot of scepticism about him as a Notting Hillbilly toff.”

Lord Salisbury’s comments came as Mr Cameron was hit by a revolt over his plans to transfer people’s NHS records to Google.

He said: “Google is the last company I would trust with data belonging to me.

“In the words of the human rights watchdog Privacy International, Google has ‘a history of ignoring privacy concerns. Every corporate announcement has some new practice involving surveillance’.”

Mr Davis said companies trusted with personal data should be “subject to personal judicial and national influence. They should not be beyond control. So when we are handing out these state contracts Google need not apply”.

Mr Davis’s remarks will be seen as a personal attack on Mr Cameron, who has close links to Google.

His adviser Steve Hilton is married to Rachel Whetstone, Google’s head of communications, while the company’s chief executive Eric Schmidt is a Tory adviser.

As for your threat to “tell Norman” not me a fellow Lib, I am afraid I will just have to live with the terror that a “few choice words” from Norman will come my way.

Détente no chance.

City West executive becomes resident’s slave for the day

City West ’s Head of Communities, Martin Reed’s doesn’t mind getting his hands dirty for the Salford – based housing association. At a recent summer fair in Eccles, the raffle to win Martin’s services as a “slave for the day”, helping out with household and gardening chores, was one of the event’s main attractions.

Mrs Pauline Thompson was the lucky winner; as the secretary of the local Tenant and Resident Association she unselfishly decided that Martin should help clear some rooms at the Brookhouse Community Centre in order to create a new dance studio for local groups. So last week, Martin spent the day at the Centre and under Pauline’s strict supervision cleared a former squash court which had long been using as a dumping ground for unwanted objects.

Martin Reed, City West Housing Trust’s Head of Communities comments: “I have to admit it was an exhausting day – using muscles that usually don’t get much exercise in a normal day in the office – but it was great to see the room cleared at the end of the day
