A crackdown on the number of sick days taken by staff at ———- Council has had dramatic results.
The local authority, which was recently recognised with a prestigious Beacon Award, has seen the average number of sick days cut in half over the last six years.
In the last 12 months the council’s staff took an average of just under eight days off sick.
This compared with around 16 days per year per employee in ————This improvement equates to a saving of around [pounds sterling]100,000 for the authority in employee time lost.
This was a key factor which i felt needed answers in relation to how we as a council where performing. The reality was we were spending over £Six Million pounds per year on Sick pay.I felt surely this needed answers Labour offered none.I think what you will see in my highlights over the coming months are my key concerns relative to waste. If we could reduce waste we could then target areas of which we felt offered the highest concern. This level of expenditure in my opinion needed highlighting and at least answers over our concerns, to date we have seen or heard nothing.Of course there must be adequate provision to cover sickness leave but when we reach this level it starts to offer concern.
The sample council above shows how bad things can get if left to go out of control, my question if we were to look into even at a small reduction in our total spend it could offer flexibility in other key areas. The company i work for looks closely at the health of all employees, they try to provide the right environment for employees offering advice on heath matters reducing stress levels, correct working practices, simple ideas costing little but offering long term benefits.Perhaps we need to rethink our policies.
