I am trying to be fair. The amiable young leader of the Conservative Party seems a broadminded liberal who is doing his damnedest to get women Tories elected. He talks even of all-female short lists, and I must admit that if all his women candidates are as interesting as Liz Truss the nation has a lot to look forward to.

But is his the ‘traditional’ Tory attitude? I don’t think so. Sir Jeremy Bagge, it seems to me, would feel far more at home in the Hopwood Unionist Club, Heywood, which by 37 votes to 30 last July barred all women from entering its hallowed games room.

The Halliwell darts team from Bolton only found out about the ban when it entered the place for a second division match against the Heywood darts team, which had booked the room for the fixture. The Bolton lads had taken two women along to watch them win, and when the club steward refused to let them in, promptly cancelled the match.

I don’t know whether the Hopwood Unionist Club is affiliated to the Conservative Party, but I have never met a unionist who votes for anything else. Nor do I personally know of a single Connie Club in my area of Lancashire which allows women to vote on its committee.

That’s the way most Tory voters are – as laughably behind the times as bossman spoilsport Sir Jeremy Bagge.didates are as interesting as Liz Truss the nation has a lot to look forward to.

Purposes of Green Belt Land

There are five purposes of including land in Green Belts:

  • To check the unrestricted sprawl of large built-up areas
  • To prevent neighbouring towns from merging into one another
  • To assist in safeguarding the countryside from encroachment
  • To preserve the setting and special character of historic towns
  • To assist in urban regeneration, by encouraging the recycling of derelict and other urban land.

The Use of Land in Green Belts

Once Green Belts have been defined, the use of land in them has a positive role to play in fulfilling the following objectives:

  • To provide opportunities for access to the open countryside for the urban population
  • To provide opportunities for outdoor sport and outdoor recreation near urban areas
  • To retain attractive landscapes, and enhance landscapes, near to where people live
  • To improve damaged and derelict land around towns
  • To secure nature conservation interest
  • To retain land in agricultural, forestry and related uses.

Sad when a read a piece from a Local reporter this week in the Advertiser over the Anniversary of the miners strike

2_3 I felt strange as i read the article because it reminded me of how strong i felt about what happened during that period in my life. People of my age. 50+ must have a vivid memory of that time and the effects it had on many people within this country. My Uncle said at our dinner table if Thatcher wins the industry will die and it’s the end of most of the rights of British workers Some people ask why i feel so strongly against a Tory regime. Well look back on the suffering it caused so many people. Any one who enjoys playing on a computer leave your twitters and your facebooks alone and study what life was like. Look at the dark black and white stills of the sufferings of men women and children during those dark days. It makes it even harder to see how British police where used to rip apart communities.Look closely at your pay and conditions ,the year is 2009 and as many of you read this i would say the highest percentage are on minimum wages why?.I was an active trade union member like most, yes there where many of us who lost the plot on protecting workers rights and used our right to strike without thought or consequence. But many of us worked hard to develop a range of protection and safe working practice for that i can hold my head up and have no shame in being part of the past. The Tories when Elected will put forward a range of policy that will not effect the highest paid sectors of our society it will again be the British working class and there are very few unions left to fight them.

Democracy in Salford should be seen or heard by all

In anticipation of today’s full council session, I recently wrote to Salford City Council to ask permission to make an audio recording of the day’s events. The city’s solicitor replied and answered that, no, audio recordings were not allowed – citing various reasons, including the possibility that the audio recordings could be “maliciously” edited.

Other councils such as Gloucestershire County Council, Haringey Council and Canterbury City Council have their own in-house audio recording systems (connected to the chamber’s already existing microphone loop) and provide downloadable audio recordings (in MP3 format) on their council’s own websites.

Why can’t Salford do the same? The apparent answer is cost. I was amazed to get an answer so quickly – apparently the city solicitor was aware of the high cost when he replied “operation of recording comes at a not inconsiderable cost both in terms of capital to buy and install the equipment and income with the cost of an operator and the cost of publishing the results to fund. There has been no provision in the budget for such expenditure.”

Steve question should make people think, he as asked openly why we are not more transparent within Council. As a resident of this city a fair question. I for one fully endorse is comment and views. It would offer the people of Salford a better chance to see how their ward councillors work and defend their corner.Perhaps there would be less sitting on the fence and more positive debate if the People of this city could see what they were getting for there Buck.
