‘Hoodwink’ row over hotel Rick

A SALFORD councillor has been accused of “hoodwinking” local people after it emerged he has spent the past year running a guest house in Blackpool.

Liberal Democrat Rick Powell was elected councillor for Weaste and Seedley in May 2004.

But in April last year he moved to Blackpool to take over a hotel with his wife and has been living and working nearly 50 miles away from his ward ever since.

He has continued to serve as a councillor despite the move – and in the last 12 months claimed ’9,300 in basic allowances.

Coun Powell has not claimed travel expenses but has been unable to attend surgeries with his constituents due to his new business. Since he was elected he has attended 15 out of 26 possible meetings of the full council.

Coun Powell has now revealed that he intends to step down at this year’s local elections.

Resigned

The former deputy leader of Salford Liberal Democrats, Tim Perkins, who remains a councillor in Claremont but has quit the party, said: “He should have resigned his seat. It is appalling to hoodwink the people of Weaste and Seedley in this way.”

Coun Powell, who runs the Woodley Hotel on Blackpool’s North Shore, said the Liberal Democrat group discussed the question as to whether he should have quit when he moved.

He said: “It was decided I should stay because of all the work I have put in regarding the housing renewal strategy.

“It was thought it would have been a waste of my knowledge and experience if I had gone then.

“I have been to council meetings and non-official meetings. I’ve been coming over on average about once a week.”

SHOULD the absent councillor have resigned? Have your say.

Once again we see the Salford Liberal Democrats treating Salford citizens with contempt. This is an absolute disgrace. I hope the other political parties in the city exploit it to its full extent and let the people know what the Lib Dems think of them. People should realise that a vote for the Liberal Democrats in Salford is a wasted vote.

Wel tonight we met again to pick one more candidate for may.

Even though one lib dem thinks it’s the death of independent politics in Salford i feel more confident after tonight-s meeting. It could take years to take shape but i have the time and the passion. We may start to see the end of Career politicians that sprout from the tory wings or people who use the role of councillors to get what they really want, MEP last year MP this year what’s next. The trouble is i got in to this game to help the people i don’t come out of the box three months before an election.I put out leaflets. I sit on street corners and hold surgeries. We may not get our fair share of the press but eight weeks is enough to fight so lets see who comes out on top in may.We have Four confirmed candidates none are paper but i suppose Nobby will be running around to fill up the sheets  with Names with no chances.

More on the Liberal Democrat Budget

From Tonight s Advertiser. i quote from their leaders column on the Budget.

“We propose cutting unnecessary allowances for councillors” H-mm.

When Salford Independents broke a Story on Wednesday in the Manchester Evening News we said we had refused to Except the £ 8.000 Allowance. tax payers money given to leaders of parties, But the Liberal Dem leader said it was a Cheap shot! he made it clear he was not giving his allowance up. So What do the Lib-Dems Class as unnecessary allowances? any as long as it’s not theirs?

Sad the story was not worth a line in the Advertiser.

Comment on the Salford Advertiser web page

Very surprising that Salford Tory’s are suggesting reducing the number of Neighbourhood Managers. If the Tory councillors are advocates of the free market then they should recognise the massive value and return on investment resulting from the Neighbourhood Managers and their teams

Well it’s what you would call a cut. And when the Tories get in it will be the first of many.
